i'm always grateful to those ppl in my life for being the window of my ivory tower... to catch a glimpse of what the rest of the world is like... so unlike the rosy hues of rj community. not rosy la. too pleasant. just myopic.
i think i won't give up hope... it goes against the fibre of my conscience, if there is such a thing. From Jodi Picoult’s Nineteen Minutes, I learned 2 socio-economics equations:
Happiness = Reality / Expectations
Hope = Expectations / Reality
From these two, it seems that a person can only be either happy or optimistic. Taking reality to be a constant, if E is high, Hope is high and Happiness is low. If E is low, Hope is low and Happiness is high. Since E ≠ 0, a person can never live without hope or live with infinite happiness. Maybe that’s why we’re in heaven only when we die ^.^
DOes this mean that a person needs to pessimistic in order to be happy? I think cynicism is more of an unconscious defense from hurt. To maximize happiness, one minimizes hope. Cynicism is like some way to prevent yourself from getting hurt again.
Besides, there is a distinct difference between happiness and fulfillment isn't there? Peace, joy... such banal terms. But they exist because they're not synonymous with happiness. It's curious how happiness isn't part of the Big 4 christmas values - Peace, Hope, Joy and Love. Keeping a flame alive, no matter how energy-consuming or futile, will at least provide a little light. It may not brighten the path ahead (most of the times, the flame of hope is too tiny for that), but it at least gives some measure of warmth and comfort. At least, we won't be in complete darkness. No matter how dire the straits, it's never useless to hope. A glimmer, a vestige... it's there... somewhere, within the hearts of even the most cynical.
Certainly, there are times where we should be content with what we have. On one hand, the idealist is never satisfied. On the other hand, the contented will sink into decadance and stagnation. Ahhh drawing the line is always the most difficult thing to do...
don't despair =)
